UNIVERSAL DESIGN
GOAL
From existing floor plans, remodel the home of a man in his 50’s to enable him to live self-sufficiently. Using both levels, provide space for guests or live-in help. Include Universal Design principles and ADA standards.
SOLUTION
With wheelchair access throughout home and furnishings that comply with ADA standards, the client can now move freely and self-sufficiently. There is adequate space for entertaining up to eight guests in the living room, dining room, outdoor space, and new guest bath. A large, functional kitchen and living room with book display on either side of fireplace and large cased opening to the dining room creates flow and openness in floor plan. By expanding the second floor into attic space, two guest bedrooms, a full guest bath, and a large office were gained. This design improves the function of the home while making it more comfortable for all.
CONCEPT
By providing access to appliances and fixtures as well as traffic patterns throughout the living space, I created a living environment that is suitable for an individual in a wheelchair, while maintaining standard features of a comfortable and pleasing home.
